Trans Fat Traps

  • Trans fats are found in many of your processed foods. They lower your good cholesterol, raise your bad cholesterol, and increase your risk of stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.
  • Energy bars with candy like coating contain trans fat.  Look for ones without partially hydrogenated oils.
  • Hot cocoa mix: Most have trans fat, so make your own with skim milk, unsweetened cocoa and sugar
  • Muffins: Anything baked with shortening will contain trans fat. Make them at home and use canola oil.
  • Pancake, waffle and cake mixs all contain trans fat.  Make your own at home or check health food stores for healthier versions.
  • Peanut butter: Most processed brands are made with hydrogenated oil, so choose natural peanut butter
  • Tortillas:  The ones found on the interior aisles are made with trans fat and last forever.  Choose those found in the refrigerated case.
  • Salad dressing:  Most contain trans fat, so make your own using vinegar, olive oil and seasoning.
